Following the news that Doreen Green -- a.k.a. Squirrel Girl -- will leap into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Freeform's "New Warriors" show, many fans have already begun speculating who will take up the leading role. According to Freeform executive vice president Karey Burke, "Pitch Perfect" star Anna Kendrick and Shannon Purser of "Stranger Things" fame -- two actresses high on fans' wish lists -- are already being considered.

"Those names have come up," Burke teased during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "This network has made a lot of stars and we're in a unique position with Squirrel Girl and Marvel. The character is such a calling card. I'm interested to see if name actresses feel right for it."

Kendrick has expressed interest in the offbeat hero, an idea director Edgar Wright once called “a perfect casting." Purser, who played Barb in the Duffer Brothers’ smash hit Netflix series “Stranger Things,” has also made her desire to play the character known.

Debuting in “Marvel Super Heroes vol. 2” #8, Squirrel Girl was created by writer Will Murray and artist Steve Ditko. In addition to her super strength, Doreen can speak to squirrels, and she once she teamed with Tony Stark to defeat the villainous Doctor Doom. After disappearing for decades, the obscure hero found new notoriety when Dan Slott and Paul Pelletier had her join the Great Lakes Avengers in their “GLA: Misassembled” miniseries, where she was portrayed as an unbeatable force for good — even if most of the Marvel Universe was unaware of her existence. Since then, Squirrel Girl has been seen in numerous arcs and storylines across the Marvel Universe, including an ongoing solo series written by Ryan North and drawn by Erica Henderson.

Freeform's upcoming "New Warriors" show does not yet have a release date.
