Though the upcoming film The New Mutants is set to release later this year, it was originally set to open in 2018. This has caused some confusion about when the story will take place. Thankfully, one of the film's producers, Karen Rosenfelt, has helped clear up the confusion.

"It's contemporary timeless," Rosenfelt told Digital Spy back in 2017. "We don't define where we are, but it is today. It's contemporary. It's not way in the future and it's not in the past." She went on to stress that they wanted to make The New Mutants "unique."

It was recently revealed that The New Mutants will feature references to previous 21st Century Fox X-Men films. Some have found this strange, considering The New Mutants has been said to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The first X-Men movie to be released through Fox was 2000's X-Men and the last was 2019's Dark Phoenix. Other Fox films featuring X-Men-related characters include 2016's Deadpool, 2017's Logan and 2018's Deadpool 2.
