New ‘Hobbit’ Legacy Trailer Returns to Middle-Earth One Last Time

To get audiences psyched up for the release of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies next month, Warner Bros. has released a new trailer that places the final Hobbit film in context with all the Middle-earth films that came before it.

The clip begins with Frodo Baggins’ whispered exclamation, “I wish the ring had never come to me,” and then rolls through the most memorable moments and hero shots from director Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. While shots of old favorites — Gimli! Sam! — flash past, imposing text looks ahead and tells viewers that the “defining chapter of this great legend shall now be told.”

The second half of the clip features Dwarves singing over footage from the previous Hobbit films (2012’s An Unexpected Journey and 2013’s The Desolation of Smaug). The clip then urges everyone to “return with us to Middle-earth one last time.” As these two J.R.R. Tolkien-inspired franchises have earned a combined $2.1 billion dollars domestically, odds are these clips will resonate with the millions and millions of moviegoers that have made seeing these Hobbit/Jackson jams their holiday tradition.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies opens Dec. 17.
