ComiXology has announced the launch of comiXology Unlimited, a new service which will give readers “endless access” to thousands digital comics, graphic novels and manga from select publishers for $5.99 a month. ComiXology Unlimited will be available on any device, both on the web and through the comiXology apps.
For the flat cost of $5.99 a month, readers will be given access to titles from Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics, IDW Publishing, BOOM! Studios, Oni Press, Archie Comics, Valiant Entertainment, Fantagraphics Books and more. Titles available in the Unlimited program will feature an “Unlimited” banner on them in the comiXology store. This includes series like “The Walking Dead,” “Hellboy,” “Saga,” “Attack on Titan,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Lumberjanes,” “Transformers,” “Love and Rockets,” “Archie,” “Invincible” and “Locke & Key” among many others.
“It sounds silly but our mission is to make everyone on the planet a comics fan,” comiXology CEO David Steinberger told EW in the announcement. “That’s really hard to do by just throwing them into the middle of 100,000 comic books. It’s a lot easier if people have a very low risk opportunity to discover comics for themselves and just really take their time with the catalog.”
The service is described in the EW piece as “Netflix for comics,” and it notes that titles will be rotated in and out similar to how the video streaming service operates. comiXology Unlimited will also have recommendation tools to help guide users through the thousands of available comics. Unlimited won’t disrupt any of comiXology’s previous features; comics can still be browsed and purchased as before. Unlimited users will be able to see a filter that allows them to browse titles available through the service.
ComiXology Unlimited is now available in the United States and will roll out to other countries in the future. Readers can sign up for a free 30-day trial now.
