“War has started and we are hopelessly outgunned,” Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) says, as explosions go off across New York City. “Director Fury? I think it’s time,” says Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg). After a previously used scene with Captain America (Chris Evans), fans get a first look at Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) recruiting Dr. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) in a remote cabin surrounded by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. After Thor (Chris Hemsworth) showcases his abilities as God of Thunder, Cap shakes hands with Banner as Fury explains, “It’s called the Avengers initiative.”
Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) clarifies a plot point from “Iron Man 2” which implied he would not be a part of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. “I thought I didn’t qualify,” Stark says as we get our first glimpse of the massive Stark Tower. “Apparently I’m — what is it? Volatile, self-obsessed and don’t play well with others.”
After the first footage of Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, the action really begins to take off. From Thor on a Quinjet and Black Widow’s martial arts skills to crowds cowering before Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) falling as he draws back his bowstring, the adrenaline rush only continues as Banner proclaims, “We’re not a team. We’re a time bomb.” The alien aircraft are then showcased with an extended chase scene between Iron Man and the alien invaders seen in the Super Bowl trailer. As the Avengers assemble in a circle, the Black Widow says to Hawkeye, “This is nothing we were ever trained for.”
As a final tease, the trailer ends with a giant, worm-like ship tearing through a building headed straight toward the super-team.
The trailer is available in English with three versions: the identical American and Canadian cuts as well as an Australian trailer with seven more seconds of footage. Its premiere follows the reveal of a new “Avengers” poster and the change of the film’s name in the UK to “Avengers Assemble.”
