Called "Carriage Chase," the sequence has all the traits of a classic action-adventure, or, say, a Western: fighting, a pursuit on horseback, a desperate leap onto a rapidly moving carriage followed by a narrow escape as it careens off a cliff.

Based on the blockbuster video-game franchise, the film stars Fassbender as a career criminal who’s rescued from execution by Abstergo Industries, the modern-day incarnation of the Templar Order. Forced to participate in the Animus Project, Lynch relives the memories of his ancestor Aguilar de Nerha, an Assassin in the time of the Spanish Inquisition. As he continues to experience Aguilar’s memories, Lynch begins to acquire the knowledge and skills need to confront the Templars in the present day.

Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

Directed by Justin Kurzel (“Snowtown,” “Macbeth”), the film also stars Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson and Michael K. Williams. “Assassin’s Creed” opens Dec. 21.
