The message behind the latest trailer for Annabelle -- the Conjuring spinoff -- seems pretty clear: Don't keep the doll a crazy woman died holding after breaking into your house, because it will definitely lead to a haunting.

Like The Conjuring, which is based on real-life paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren, Annabelle has roots in reality. According to the Warrens' official site, Annabelle was supposedly a girl who died on land that became an apartment building, and was thought to inhabit a woman's Raggedy Ann doll. It allegedly would move around the house and leave notes, but seemed mostly benevolent until it attacked a male friend, trying to strangle him once and clawing him another time. The Warrens were called in and deduced that this wasn't a spirit, but actually a demonic spirit. To keep the young women safe, the Warrens took Annabelle to their own home, where it continued its supernatural feats and resides to this day in a special case.

John R. Leonetti directed the project, which hits theaters on Oct. 3. The cast includes Annabelle Wallis, Alfre Woodard and Eric Laden.

John Form has found the perfect gift for his expectant wife, Mia — a beautiful, rare vintage doll in a pure white wedding dress. But Mia’s delight with Annabelle doesn’t last long.

On one horrific night, their home is invaded by members of a satanic cult, who violently attack the couple. Spilled blood and terror are not all they leave behind. The cultists have conjured an entity so malevolent that nothing they did will compare to the sinister conduit to the damned that is now...Annabelle.

The Conjuring 2, starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as the Warrens, arrives Oct. 23, 2015.
