On the heels of a report last week, Netflix has officially announced development of The Umbrella Academy, a 10-episode drama based on the acclaimed Dark Horse comic by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba. It's targeted to debut in 2018.

“I am thrilled that The Umbrella Academy has found a home at Netflix," Way, the former frontman of My Chemical Romance, said in a statement. "I couldn’t think of a better place for the vision Gabriel Bá and myself had when creating the comic, and cannot wait for people to experience that world as a live action show."
The live-action series follows the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes (The Umbrella Academy) -- Spaceboy, The Kraken, The Rumor, The Séance, Number Five, The Horror and The White Violin -- as they work together to solve their father’s mysterious death while coming apart at the seams due to their divergent personalities and abilities.

The comic debuted in 2007 with The Umbrella Academy: The Apocalypse Suite, which was followed the next year by the miniseries The Umbrella Academy: Dallas.
The Netflix adaptation is produced by Universal Cable Productions, which announced a development deal with Dark Horse in 2015. Steve Blackman (Fargo, Altered Carbon) will serve as showrunner and executive producer, alongside Bluegrass Television and Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg from Dark Horse Entertainment. Way is co-executive producer.
The pilot script was adapted from the comic book series by Jeremy Slater (The Exorcist).
