Bluth boosters will finally get what they’ve been clamoring for since 2006: more episodes of Arrested Development.
The series won’t return to Fox, its home for three years, but will instead appear on Netflix, the DVD and streaming giant announced. The series, created by Mitchell Hurwitz and produced by Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, followed the exploits of the mostly vapid, but hilarious Bluth family as they dealt with the decay of the family business after years of being run by an unscrupulous patriarch.
Considered by many to be one of the greatest television series of all time, Arrested Development didn’t fare well in the ratings and was, some say, unceremoniously canceled after three seasons. The series starred Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, David Cross, Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett, Mae Whitman, Alia Shawkat and more, all of whom will return for the new episodes, to be produced again by 20th Century Fox and Imagine Entertainment, but distributed through Netflix.
“Of all the projects we’ve been involved with over the years, we probably get more questions about Mitch Hurwitz’s brilliant Arrested Development than any other– everyone, ourselves included, seems to feel like the Bluths left the party a bit too soon,” Grazer and Howard said in a joint statement. “Bringing a series back from cancellation almost never happens, but then, Arrested always was about as unconventional as they get, so it seems totally appropriate that this show that broke the mold is smashing it to pieces once again.”
This will not only be the first time a network TV series has made the transition to Netflix, but also the first big-time series distributed solely through the company. Known for canceling series before their time, Fox is the only network that occasionally corrects its supposed mistakes. Arrested Development joins Family Guy and Futurama as returned series from the network. The new episodes will begin appearing on Netflix in the first half of 2013, so there’s still some wait, but at least fans know for sure it’s happening!
