Netflix Japan has debuted a teaser trailer for the upcoming anime adaptation of "Devilman," the classic manga series by Go Nagai. Directed by Masaaki Yuasa ("Mind Game," "Ping Pong"), "Devilman Crybaby" will premiere worldwide in spring 2018.

The story centers on shy teenager Akira Fudo, who's asked for help by his best friend Ryo Asuka after his father dies after uncovering a mask during an excavation of the ruins of an ancient Mayan temple. It turns out the mask is actually a fossilized demon skull that allows her wearer to see what the Earth was like thousands of years ago, when demons ruled. To prevent them from rising again to reclaim the planet, Akira combines with a demon to become Devilman, retaining the heart of a human while gaining the power of a demon. Throughout the series, Akira fights demonic hordes, including the demon bird Sirène, the water demon Geruma and the turtle-like demon Jinmen.

Serialized from 1972 to 1973 in Kodansha's "Weekly Shonen Magazine," "Devilman" was adapted simultaneously by Toei as a 39-episode anime series. The manga and anime have inspired numerous spinoffs, adaptations and crossovers, including a 2004 live-action film.

A Netflix Original Series, "Devilman" will debut in 2018.
