NBC has tapped "Lost" and "The Middleman" veteran Javier Grillo-Marxuach to write its reboot of "Xena: Warrior Princess."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, he'll executive produce alongside "Xena" co-creators Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi.

Confirmed by the network in August following weeks of rumors, the project has been described as a "new take" on the cult series, which aired in syndication from 1995 to 2001. Lucy Lawless, who originated the role of Xena, isn't involved in the reboot.

Citing unnamed sources, THR indicates the revival will follow "a new, modern Xena" that the network hopes is a blend of Lawless' character and Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss from "The Hunger Games." The potential series is targeted for a 2016 premiere.

Grillo-Marxuach, who created "The Middleman" comic with artist Les McClaine before bringing it to television, has also worked on "Charmed" and "Medium."
