Narita Boy is a game that has already been on a journey even before it is released. Originally a Kickstarter project way back in 2017, it raised over $190,000 before missing its original December 2018 release date. Despite reappearing over the years with updates, Narita Boy recently made a triumphant return with a brand new stylish trailer and an announcement that strategy specialist and Worms developer Team 17 would be publishing the game.

Developed by Studio Koba, Narita Boy is a "radical action-adventure" game that challenges players to save the world "as a legendary pixel hero trapped as a mere echo within the Digital Kingdom." Players will also, "Discover the mysteries behind the Techno-sword [and] lock swords with the corrupt and tainted Stallions."

Narita Boy's story revolves around a mysterious figure known as The Creator. The Creator, who is described as a genius, develops a video game console dubbed the Narita One, which features a game called Narita Boy. This quickly becomes the best-selling game of all time. However, not all is well, as "inside the binary code, the digital realm connects with reality." The antagonist is table to delete The Creator's memories, and the program activates the Narita Boy protocol. Players must enter the digital world and wield the mighty Techno-Sword in a story straight out of '80s sci-fi classic Tron.

The '80s influence doesn't stop there, as seen in the gorgeous trailer. Narita Boy is cloaked in neon pixel-art glory, with the protagonist in their cyber suit battling throughout a wild and fantastical sci-fi/fantasy world. The art and animations are stunning, featuring robot horses with CRT tube television heads, techno wasteland deserts and neon absolutely everywhere. The style is described by the developers as neo-retro, with magical temples and landscapes equipped with circuitry and computer screens. Narita Boy looks like what fans in the '80s imagined Commodore 64 and Atari games looked like based on the box art.

Narita Boy's gameplay looks just as dynamic and crisp as its visuals as well. Players wield the legendary Techno-Sword, a weapon that can transform from a broadsword into a shotgun and laser beam. The combat looks fast and fluid, with the protagonist dashing around the screen and attacking enemies from both sides. Players can currently try the Narita Boy demo out as a part of the Steam Game Festival, but they'll have to act fast, as it is only available until February 9.

Narita Boy is a visually stunning game that looks to appeal to retro gaming enthusiasts and action platformer fans alike. The neo-retro '80s style, paired with dynamic gameplay and a clear Tron influence, makes Narita Boy worth checking out. With a planned release date of early 2020, hopefully players won't have to wait too much longer to raise the Techno-Sword high and dive into the virtual world of neon tech-fantasy when it releases on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
