The first trailer for the CW's upcoming superhero series Naomi features a battle with Superman, the discovery of new powers, and a Thanagarian warrior.
Following the first poster for Naomi, the trailer teases what the comic book adaptation will focus on. Namely, it will see Kaci Walfall's Naomi McDuffie begin to discover she has mysterious powers and a cosmic past after she finds herself in the middle of a fight between Superman and an unknown enemy. While Naomi's search for answers will be challenging enough, she'll also have to contend with several individuals keen to use her abilities for their own aims. But she'll luckily have the aid of Dee, a Thangarian warrior from the same planet as Hawkman and Hawkwoman who sports his own pair of Nth metal wings. Played by Alexander Wraith, the tattoo artist-by-day will serve as a mentor for the young hero. "He really believes in her more than she can believe in herself," Walfall said in a recent interview. "Although he doesn't have all the answers, he teaches her more and more about how to control herself."
What's unclear is whether Tyler Hoechlin will reprise his Arrowverse role as Superman on the series. It's possible this Man of Steel will be played by a different actor. After all, "Crisis on Infinite Earths" showed Superman and other heroes can look quite different across the various parallel worlds of DC's films and TV shows, and it's not yet known if Naomi takes place in the same universe as The Flash and Batwoman.
Created by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker, and Jamal Campbell, Naomi debuted in 2019 under Bendis' Wonder Comics imprint. A seemingly normal girl, Naomi discovers her parents are from another world after an encounter with Superman. Possessing flight, super-strength, and energy manipulation, she eventually joins the Young Justice team.
In December 2020, word arrived that Ava DuVernay would adapt the comic to TV. In May 2021, the show received a series order at the CW. Meanwhile, the next season of the Naomi comic arrives from Bendis, Walker, and Campbell in 2022.
Naomi premieres Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2022, at 9 p.m. EST/8 p.m. CST on the CW.
