Corporate synergy is rarely this delightful: A new Netflix promo has paired two of the streaming service’s shows, “Stranger Things” and “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” exactly how you’d hope, with Jonah and the bots riffing on a couple minutes of episode one, season one of “Stranger Things.”
As Jonah Ray — er, Jonah Heston, his character name on “MST3K” — Tom Servo and Crow enter the “greyish, brownish world of the early ’80s,” they watch Chief Hopper’s (David Harbour) morning ritual and dub the scene “more like ‘Sadder Things.'”
Fourteen new episodes of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” — the first new episodes of the cult-favorite since 1999 — debuted this past Friday on Netflix, the culmination of a Kickstarter campaign to revive the show, launched by series creator and original star Joel Hodgson launched in November 2015. The Kickstarter raised $5,764,229 from an original goal of $2 million, despite some criticism from casting new performers in each main role, rather than show veterans.
A second season of “Stranger Things” is scheduled for release on October 31 of this year — yep, a thematically appropriate Halloween return for the sci-fi/horror series. The first season, which debuted last summer, won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
