My Adventures With Superman producer Josie Campbell has confirmed that the DC animated series is still set to premiere on Cartoon Network next year, despite Warner Bros. Discovery's decision to pull back on children's and animated content.
Campbell, writer of the DC comic book series The New Champion of Shazam!, recently partook in an AMA on the r/DCcomics subreddit alongside series artist Evan "Doc" Shaner. "And as an aside, yes, My Adventures With Superman is still slated to come out next year on Cartoon Network and the app!" she wrote. "Get ready!"
Warner Bros. Discovery not only operates children's television channels like Cartoon Network and Boomerang, but also produces children's content for the HBO Max streaming service. However, amid the various strategy shifts taking place at the company -- including the controversial cancellations of films like Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt -- it was recently confirmed that the company would be cutting down on kids and family programming as well.
Per Deadline, HBO Max recently canceled Ellen DeGeneres' preschool animated series Little Ellen. The streamer also pulled the plug on its live-action family series Gordita Chronicles. Regarding the latter cancellation, an HBO Max spokesperson said that "live-action kids and family programming will not be part of our programming focus in the immediate future." During Warner Bros. Discovery's recent earnings call, company CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels explained that kids and animation content would be cut "without an adequate investment case against them" across both streaming and linear networks (including Cartoon Network).
My Adventures With Superman Is Still Happening
In May 2021, prior to the Discovery merger, Warner Bros. Animation announced that it had given a two-season order to My Adventures With Superman, a new animated series that would premiere on both Cartoon Network and HBO Max. The series will star Jack Quaid (The Boys, Star Trek: Lower Decks) and Alice Lee (Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist) as Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane, respectively. In this universe, Lois and Clark are depicted as twentysomething up-and-comers at the Daily Planet.
"Superman has remained one of the most iconic and beloved Super Heroes in the world," Warner Bros. Head of Kids and Family Programming Amy Friedman said at the time. "This fresh take from the Warner Bros. Animation team delivers a modern, relatable Clark Kent alongside a fearless, whip smart Lois Lane who are navigating the small tasks of both becoming adults and trying to save the world."
The following June, Tom Ascheim -- then-President of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics -- explained that My Adventures With Superman would take inspiration from the live-action, Christopher Reeve-led Superman films of the 1970s and '80s. "This one is sort of taking as its inspiration the movie from the Christopher Reeve stories, so it's kind of a romantic comedy and Lois and Clark, and Jimmy [Olsen], are just recent college graduates," he said. "They're at the Daily Planet. They're going through the life stuff that you go through when you're in your early 20s. But there's a lot of-- It's a romance, you know, in addition to being a superhero story. In our version, Clark is new to his powers, so it's also a-- it's a coming of age story for all of them."
My Adventures With Superman is slated to premiere on Cartoon Network in 2023.
