MTV gets a bit gutsy in its first trailer for "Scream: The TV Series," in which one of the characters boldly proclaims, "You can't do a slasher movie as a TV series."

OK, perhaps it's not boldness but rather self-awareness, a signature of the film franchise on which the show is based. Whether the producers can pull off a slasher story in a serial format is one of the big questions that's dangled over the project since 2012 (yes, we've been talking about the series that long).

Beyond the serial-killer element, MTV appears to be sticking to a formula that's served it and The CW well: attractive rich kids with relationship drama. And the occasional severed head in the hot tub.

Premiering June 30, "Scream" stars Bella Thorne, Willa Fitzgerald, Amy Forsyth, John Karna, Carlson Young and Amadeus Serafini.
