Ms. Marvel Headed to Avengers 2?

Ms. Marvel Headed to Avengers 2?

If Britain’s Daily Mail is to be believed — that’s a pretty sizable “if” — director Joss Whedon is looking to double the female ranks of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the sequel to Marvel’s blockbuster The Avengers.

According to the newspaper, Emily Blunt (Looper, The Adjustment Bureau) and Ruth Wilson (Luther, The Lone Ranger) are both “head-to-head” and “hotly tipped” to play Ms. Marvel, the four-decade-old superheroine who now goes by Captain Marvel in Marvel comics.

A few things give me pause, not the least of which is the source. There’s also the fuzziness of the phrase “hotly tipped,” which could point to sources ranging anywhere from a Marvel Studios insider to a publicist to a couple of fannish reporters chatting over beer saying, “You know who’d be perfect to play Ms. Marvel?” Also, with The Avengers 2 not going into production until sometime next year at the earliest, it seems unlikely that Whedon has completed the script, let alone begun casting.

But, hey, both actresses have seen their stars rise over the past few years, and Blunt has been on Marvel’s radar for a little while: She was offered the role of Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger but passed. Likewise, Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel has been given an increased profile in comics, where she launched a solo series in August.

Make of that what you will, but it does seem likely Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow won’t be the lone woman on the team when The Avengers 2 opens May 1, 2015. Whether that new addition will be Ms. Marvel, or instead someone like the Wasp or Scarlet Witch, naturally remains to be seen.
