There are hundreds of inhabited planets in the DC Universe filled with a variety of alien races, from the Guardians of the Universe to Earthlings to the New Gods. Some of these planets are peaceful and generous, while others are more warlike. A thousand years in the future, many of these planets will work together as the United Planets, an organization that readers recently saw the birth of in Superman #15.

With so many planets, it can be difficult to keep track of the ones that have had the biggest impact on the comics. Not every planet in the DC Universe has made a mark in history, but many of them stand out as planets that have shaped the path of the universe, bringing about intergalactic wars, protecting the weaker worlds, or in some cases causing the destruction of planets.

10 Oa

Oa the Planet of the Green Lanterns

The homeworld of the Guardians of the Universe, Oa serves as the headquarters of the Green Lantern Corps, a group of different races from all over the universe that use their Power Rings to keep the peace. The Guardians, one of the oldest races in the universe, have made it their mission to protect the universe from cosmic threats, first with the creation of the Manhunters and then when they turned on their masters, the Green Lanterns. Oa once sat at the center of the universe, but after the events of Infinite Crisis, Earth became the center.

9 Earth

The home of the Justice League and the Teen Titans, Earth will one day serve as the base of operations for the Legion of Super-Heroes. The third planet in the Sol Star System, Earth is a primitive world compared to many others, but the increasing number of superpowered beings that reside there makes Earth an important piece of the universe. Many races fear that Earth will one day use its superheroes to conquer the universe and have on occasion tried to use preemptive measures to stop that from happening.

Not long after Perpetua created the universe, she took the beings that lived on Earth and combined them with the beings from Mars, creating the Apex Predators. This action, among others, would lead to Perpetua being imprisoned in the Source Wall by the Judges of the Source.

8 Krypton

The destruction of Krypton

The home of the Kryptonians, Krypton was a world of science and art that had once ventured out into the stars but became isolationist in its later years. When the independent scientist Jor-El came to believe that the planet's core was unstable and in danger of breaking apart, the Kryptonian Science Council ignored his dire warning. Not long after, Krypton's core did indeed break apart, leading to the explosion of the planet. Before Krypton exploded, Jor-El was able to launch his infant son into space. The child's rocket landed on Earth and years later he would become Superman.

7 Apokolips

Apokolips home of Darkseid

When the Old Gods died, the New Gods were born and the Fourth World began. Separated from the rest of the universe, Apokolips is home to an immortal and evil society led by one of the most vile beings in the Multiverse, Darkseid. With his army of Parademons, Darkseid keeps his citizens, the "Lowlies," down through endless abuse. Darkseid searches the universe for the Anti-Life Equation, going from planet to planet searching for his treasure, and leaving behind nothing but death. Darkseid has tried to conquer Earth on a number of occasions but has always been defeated by the Justice League.

6 New Genesis

Apokolips and New Genesis homes of the New Gods

The sister planet to Apokolips, New Genesis is a paradise world that serves as the home for the heroic New Gods. Led by the wise Highfather, the Genesisians who reside on New Genesis live in Supertown, a city that floats above the ground, making sure to never cause harm to the wildlife of New Genesis. Along with the Genesisians, New Genesis is home of the Primitives, a society that chose to live outside of Highfather's rule, and the Bugs, who live on the land but are treated as equals of the Genesisians.

5 War World

War World home of Mongul

Ruled over by the alien tyrant Mongul, Warworld is an artificial planet built by the Warzoons to travel across the universe and destroy other planets. Mogul uses Warwolrd to train his armies and to put on gladiatorial battles for the enjoyment of the Warworldians, the citizens of Warworld.

The gladiators of Warworld are made up of fighters from planets that Warwold has attacked in the past. These gladiators are little more than slaves forced to fight to the death for Mongul's amusement. At one time, Superman was captured and forced to take part in the gladiatorial arena.

4 Thanagar

Thanagar home of the Hawkpeople

Famous for its mineral deposits of Nth Metal, Thanagar is the home of the Thanagarians. Millennia ago, the Thanagarians were enslaved by the Polara Empire. The Thanagarian hero Kalmoran killed his masters and led the planet in a revolution against the Polara, going from planet to planet destroying the Empire. The scars of their past led to the Thanagarians becoming a spoecies of aggressive people who believed that the best defense was a good offense. Thanagar joined the Dominators and their Alliance in the invasion of Earth, fearing that the planet's superpowered people would one day try to conquer the universe.

3 Qward

Existing in the Antimatter Universe, Qward is the home of a race of warriors known as the Thunderers. The greatest inventors of the Thunderers, who dedicate their lives to creating and building new tools of destruction, are known as the Weaponers. It was the Weaponers that the exiled Green Lantern Sinestro turned to create the Yellow Power Ring, leading to the birth of the Sinestro Corps.  The Thunderers serve as Sinestro's military, ready to go to war against the Green Lanterns or any other race or group that their leader wishes to see destroyed.

2 Mogo

DC PLANETS - Mogo

A sentient planet, Mogo is one of the most loved members of the Green Lantern Corps. Along with being used as a training center for the Green Lanterns, Mogo has become the home to a number of alien races that needed protection. With the ability to control his climate, Mogo can make himself the perfect planet for any race, and enjoys having beings live on him.

Along with the normal duties of a Green Lantern, Mogo is also in charge of finding new recruits to replace his comrades who die in battle, sending them Green Power Rings. There is a prophecy that when the Green Lantern Corps falls for the final time, that Mogo will be the last Green Lantern to perish.

1 Rann

Rann

After a series of nuclear wars, the people of Rann found themselves living in a new dark age. After decades, the Rannians came together to rebuild their society, turning their world into one of the most technologically advanced worlds in the universe. Rann has gone to war with Thanagar a number of times, with both races causing cataclysmic damage to the planets of their foes. With the creation of the United Planets, it seems that the wars between the two worlds have finally come to an end, but only time will tell.
