All this month I’ll be reviewing different comic books by African-American creators, based on submissions from the actual creators of the comic books themselves. A quick note – since this month is so relatively short, I’ll be featuring an extra comic every week, for a total of 32 comics spotlighted! Here is a list of all the comics spotlighted so far!
In this installment we take a look at The C-Listers #1-3 by Jon Jebus and Mervyn McKoy…
The C-Listers is a comic book that is roughly split between the misadventures of a C-List superhero Lieutenant Lightning when he is hanging out with his equally C-List fellow superheroes (and his best friends) Gear Man (think Iron Man) and Manticore and the misadventures Lieutenant Lightning gets into with his girlfriend, who also happens to be a super villain known as the Black Witch who is a powerful telepath.
In the first issue, the main conflict arises out of Lightning getting into trouble when an explosion leads to a…moment between him and a fellow superhero, Indestructible Girl…
The second issue is all about Lightning trying to make money to pay his rent (while his girlfriend is doing demonstations at sex parties to make extra money)
The third issue is about a game night between super-powered beings that goes horribly wrong.
Pretty much all of the plots are driven by Lakiesha getting angry at Lightning for SOME dumb thing he did that week. However, Jebus somehow manages to not make it all repetitive. Meanwhile, McKoy’s art style is absolutely perfect for this sort of character-driven comedic story.
There are lots of funny throwaway gags in the series, like the wacky ideas for villains (SuperMILF, for one).
It’s a fun, silly comic book. You can buy all three issues at the C-Listers’ website here.
