All this month I'll be reviewing different comic books by African-American creators, based on submissions from the actual creators of the comic books themselves. A quick note - since this month is so relatively short, I'll be featuring an extra comic every week, for a total of 32 comics spotlighted! Here is a list of all the comics spotlighted so far!

In this installment we take a look at Enrique Carrion and Dan Morison's Kill Godz #1...

The set-up of the comic is that the hero of the book, Sigourney Ischariot, is someone whose role is to, well, kill gods. What does that mean, you ask? Well, you see, in this alternate future, a company known as Cerion has been cloning mythological gods. And when these clones snap, Sigourney is there to take them out, whether she wants to be here doing this job or not...

How awesome is that Luther Strode reference?

Cerion also owns the world's most popular game show, and most of the first issue is spent exploring this show, dubbed "Are You Worthy" which is like American Idol only people have to compete for the favor of the gods, including going on missions where they might be killed. And one of the judges on the panel?

Carrion has created a fascinating world here - the "Are You Worthy?" concept plays really well and Sigourney's entrance is compelling as hell.

Morison is an excellent designer and some of these layouts are striking and the action sequences really standout (there's this one sequence where a cybernetic minotaur attacks the contestants that really popped).

Carrion, who did the excellent Vescell for Image Comics (with Roc Upchurch, whose Rat Queens I featured yesterday), is a really clever and impressive writer. I'll certainly be looking forward to all of his future projects.
