It's been three years since the release of Gareth Edwards' debut film Monsters, and the director is ready to expand the world of extraterrestrial invasion. Empire Online has debuted the first clip from Edwards' follow-up film Monsters: Dark Continent, which takes place in the same world as Monsters, this time in the U.S. military-dominated Middle East to give a different view of what infected zones are like around the world. Helmed by Misfits director Tom Green, Dark Continent is more of a continuation of the original film rather than a sequel.

"As soon as I watched Monsters I completely identified with the idea of using real locations as a foundation on which to build a world of limitless scale," Green told Empire Online. "From my first visit to the location shown here, in Jordan, it was somewhere I felt was key to making Dark Continent work. The moonscape-like environment was the perfect basis for an ‘alien’ landscape. The quarry trucks you see here became ‘buggies’ to transport the remains of firebombed monster herds to be incinerated, with all the leading characters emerging from the dust to witness the scale of the death toll for the first time — and for one character maybe too many times…"

Directed by Green and executive produced by Edwards, Monsters: Dark Continent stars Joe Dempsie, Johnny Harris, Sam Keeley and more. The film is scheduled for a 2014 release in the United Kingdom.
