MGM hopes it’s found its new Tobe Hooper. According to Deadline, the studio has hired Monster House and City of Ember director Gil Kenan to helm the Poltergeist remake.
MGM announced plans for the remake of the 1982 classic two years ago and seems to have been taking its time getting the film to the big screen. Sam Raimi will produce the film, and there’s a script by Rise of the Guardians writer David Lindsay-Abaire that was announced in October.
The original film followed the trials and tribulations of a family who just so happened to move into a new house located on top of a ghost-producing Native American burial ground. Young Carol Anne is the first to realize something’s wrong with their new house and soon finds herself battling against the spirits for her own survival.
Considering how popular haunted-house films have become in the wake of Paranormal Activity, it’s no surprise to hear about the Poltergeist remake getting pushed into high gear. Now that the producer, script and director are in place, expect casting announcements to follow relatively quickly.
