Mike Mignola is most famous as the creator of "Hellboy" and "BPRD," but he's occasionally dabbled in superhero work for the Big Two. Early in his career, his "Gotham By Gaslight" showed a unique, steampunk take on Batman. Today the world has a chance to see his vision for DC's "New Gods".

Although Mignola did work on a "New Gods" series in the late 80s, these are original designs by him, revealed today on Newsarama, and intended for an animated film that never materialized. Created by the King of Comics himself, Jack Kirby, the New Gods made their first appearance in his series "Fourth World" in 1970. The animated movie was slated to share the title.
This new artwork is quintessentially Mignola. You can see hints of Abe Sapien in his design for a young Scott Free, and his take on Darkseid ever-so-slightly resembles Hellboy. Although it is unlikely that these "Fourth World" redesigns will ever be used in a project, having this artwork is a real treat for fans of Mignola's work. And hey, if Genndy Tartakovsky's Cage series can be revived, anything is possible!
