Michael McKean, the veteran character actor best known for his role on Laverne & Shirley and his film collaborations with Christopher Guest, is the first new cast member to join the Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul.

Deadline reports he'll play Dr. Thurber, "a brilliant attorney who is now restricted by an unusual affliction," opposite Breaking Bad veterans Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman and Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut.

Interestingly, McKean is currently appearing on Broadway with Bryan Cranston in All The Way.

Created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, Better Call Saul is a prequel that centers on Odenkirk's shady lawyer before he met Walter White (however, Gilligan has indicated the series may employ the types of time jumps that became a trademark of Breaking Bad). It's targeted to premiere this fall on AMC.
