What do you call a remake of a remake? MGM calls it The Magnificent Seven. The film began life as Akira Kurosawa’s classic 1954 film The Seven Samurai, the story of a poor village that hires a group of warriors to protect it from a band of marauders. Six years later, director John Sturges helmed a Western remake starring Yul Brenner, Charles Bronson, Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn and others. That film spawned three sequels and even a TV series.
Variety reports that MGM now has plans to resurrect the classic film, tapping Nic Pizzolatto to pen the script. Fairly new to the game, Pizzolatto wrote a few episodes of AMC’s The Killing and created the upcoming HBO series True Detectives starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.
As of now, Tom Cruise is attached to the new film, but since it’s still a ways off, who knows how it will shake out.
