ABC Family's "Shadowhunters" has signed McG to direct the pilot episode and executive produce the series, Deadline reports.

Perhaps best known for such big-screen fare as "Charlie's Angels" and "Terminator Salvation," McG has also produced television series like "Chuck" and "Nikita." However, it may be his work on "Supernatural" that makes him right for this job.

"Shadowhunters" is an urban fantasy New York City plagued by Downworlders, a subset of creatures comprised of demons, vampires, werewolves and much more. The Nephilim, a human-angel hybrid species, are the only line of defense between the Downworlders and the mundanes, regular humans who are unaware this secret world exists. The story follows Clary Fray, who discovers she's part of the Nephilim after her mother is kidnapped by a demon.

The show, like the 2013 feature film "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," is based on Cassandra Claire's popular YA novels.  Production will begin next month in Toronto.
