Matt Damon has joined the cast of Alexander Payne's upcoming film, Downsizing, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The move brings new life to the project, which the Nebraska and Descendants director tried to get off the ground in 2009.

Downsizing is an appropriately titled social satire focusing on one depressed man's attempt to improve his life by shrinking himself. The film was written by Payne and his About Schmidt and Sideways collaborator Jim Taylor. During the filmmaker's 2009 attempt to make Downsizing, Paul Giamatti, Sacha Baron Cohen and Reese Witherspoon were rumored for parts in the project.

Payne, Taylor and Jim Burke are attached as producers. Before Damon shrinks himself, he will travel to Mars as a stranded astronaut in The Martian. That film added Ridley Scott as a director in May, and will co-star Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Donald Glover and Jeff Daniels among many others.
