A film based on Electronic Arts and BioWare's successful video game franchise Mass Effect is in the works courtesy of Legendary Pictures. I Am Legend and Thor writer Mark Protosevich is in talks to pen the movie while Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni as well as Avi and Ari Arad are producing the project.

The Mass Effect franchise focuses on Commander Shepard, a military veteran who travels through space in conflict with a variety of alien threats, including the deadly Saren Arterius. In the game, players can customize Shepard's gender, physical appearance and moral alignment to suit their own needs. Presumably, such customization won't exist in the film franchise.

Speaking of Mass Effect's film potential, Arad said the game is "a parable whose conflicts mirror the ones we currently face in our own world. This story emphasizes the need for all cultures to learn to work together."
