There was a whole bunch of interesting Marvel Studios news that dropped yesterday. For those looking for more detail, be sure to check out Kevin Melrose’s excellent round-up here on CBR, but here are the broad strokes: Robert Downey Jr’s contract talks are currently leaving his participation in “Avengers 2” and “Iron Man 4” in question. Both The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline have extensive reports on Marvel’s contract negotiation process following Downey Jr’s appearance on “The Daily Show,” included below.
Doug Cruetz told THR Downey Jr’s departure from the films would definitely cost Marvel — about as much as 9 percent of its near-term earnings.
“It would be a definite negative for that particular franchise. He is Tony Stark,” he said. The other individual franchises — Thor, Captain America, Hulk, etc. — don’t have near the level of box-office potential that Iron Man does. The other way to look at it is that Iron Man would probably look more like those other franchises in terms of box-office performance without Downey.”
Meanwhile, Collider reports that there are no current plans for a War Machine or Falcon-centric spinoff films, while the THR article states projects under development in Marvel’s writing program include “Ms. Marvel” and a “Blade” reboot, with “Doctor Strange,” “Iron Fist,” “Black Panther” and “The Runaways” as other projects coming up.
CBR’s Kiel Phegley spoke with Marc Guggenheim about next week’s “Arrow” season finale and what the showrunners have planned.
“I think the two main things we wanted to establish leading up to the last two episodes was to get all the cards on the table in terms of the information,” Guggenheim said. “We wanted you to know exactly what it is Malcolm had planned so there was no mystery left in that regard. Giving Malcolm the upper hand was a big piece because we wanted to feel like Oliver doesn’t have any hope of beating Malcolm. In fact, that’s even more true at the beginning of 23 than it is at the beginning of 22. Whatever hope he has at the beginning of the next episode is gone by its end. Oliver’s left feeling there’s no way he could beat Malcolm and that any attempt to do so will lead to his own death.”
TV Guide reports that Ferris Air will make a brief appearance in the season finale in flashbacks, as Fyers attampts to shoot down one of the air company’s jetliners. The appearance prompted TV Guide to ask about the possible appearance of Green Lantern or Hal Jordan in the world of the CW drama.
“As with all DC characters, we have to figure out a way for those characters to fit within our ‘Arrow’ universe,” Guggenheim told TV Guide. “But when you consider the importance that Hal Jordan plays in the Green Arrow comics, it’s certainly one of those names that we’ve discussed a great deal. I have Ryan Reynolds’ phone number around here somewhere.”
