Marvel has announced a change to its digital redeem code program, granting fans access to two or more bonus digital comics on the Marvel Comics app when they purchase a Marvel Universe title at local comic book shops.

Beginning next month, all Marvel Universe titles (excluding all-ages comics) bought in a comic book store will include a digital code to unlock two additional digital comics. One significant caveat is the code will not include a copy of the physical comic that was purchased.

"Marvel is continuing our commitment by offering our fans the best value in comics along with honoring our cornerstone of the comic book industry – the retailers," David Gabriel, Marvel's senior vice president of sales and publishing, said in a statement. "Our intent in evolving our digital code program is to offer our fans more value per dollar spent. Replacing the free digital copy, our bonus digital comics will offer fans free entry points for current on sale collected editions and, in turn, invite additional and repeat traffic into our trusted retailers."

The plan is to offer readers extra content tied to a major Marvel event or series from the past. "One of the free bonus digital comics offered in February will be 'Civil War II' #0 in time to promote the 'Civil War II' collection on sale that month," said sales director Jim Nausedas. "Then, each week, new bonus digital comics codes, available only in your local comic shop, will offer fans additional pathways into the Marvel Universe, promote Marvel’s monthly trades, and create repeat retailer customers and Marvel readers for life."

Marvel will keep fans abreast of which comics are included in the bonus digital comics program through weekly in-print and social messaging.
