Marvel Loves the ’90s in New “Marvel ’92” Variant Covers

This December, Marvel Comics plans to live every day like it’s Throwback Thursday with a series of 24 “Marvel ’92” variants celebrating the characters and artists of the 1990s. Inspired by the current digital-first series “X-Men ’92,” the “Marvel ’92” variants are illustrated by artists active in the era and showcase ’90s versions of Marvel’s characters — as seen in the initial six released.

“The Mighty Thor” cover stars Thunderstrike, and is illustrated by the character’s co-creator, Ron Frenz; “Drax” #2 highlights the character’s ’90s look and is illustrated by prolific ’90s cosmic artist Ron Lim; the “All-New Wolverine” #3 variant by Tom Raney hearkens back to that difficult period in Logan’s life after Magneto ripped the adamantium from his body and Wolverine responded by wearing a bandana on his head rather than a mask; the “Totally Awesome Hulk” #1 variant by Dale Keown, who built his reputation on the character, takes it back to the character’s gun-toting, tank top-wearing “smart Hulk” days; former “Fantastic Four 2099” artist Pasqual Ferry returns to that world for a “Spider-Man 2099” #4 variant; and Mike Deodato‘s “Carnage” #3 variant celebrates, what else? “Maximum Carnage.”

“The X-Men aren’t the only ones getting in on the ’92 action,” Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing David Gabriel said in a press release. “Witnessing that memorable era of comics brought to life again got us thinking about all the fun incarnations of Marvel’s most popular characters. Before we knew it we had a huge list of 1990s characters ready to make their 2015 debut!”
