The time has finally arrived. Marvel Legacy #1 is here, and the one-shot has brought with it a slew of teases and unanswered questions for the future of the Marvel Universe. From long dead or missing characters returning, to past-altering cosmic catastrophes, the next year of Marvel is going to be one that shakes things up, for better or for worse.

With all of that in mind, we sat down to take a closer look at some of Legacy’s most pressing mysteries, and take some guesses as to what they might mean.

What “Infected” the Celestial?

The event that assembled the Avengers of 1,000,000 BC has been revealed, and it’s as earth shattering as you might have guessed. A Celestial has crashed into Earth -- but not just any Celestial. This one, according to Agamotto, seemed “infected” or almost rabid. Worse yet? It seems to be searching for something within the planet.

legacy-celestial

Luckily, the first ever team of Avengers is ready to stop it, but rather than nailing it to the moon like Odin suggested, they apparently leave it disabled and buried after they defeat it. Now, in the current day, it seems to be waking up thanks to an archeological dig taking place just above it, prompting all sorts of unpleasant side effects -- just ask Robbie Reyes, who apparently teleported from East L.A. to South Africa while dreaming of his million year old, mammoth-riding ancestor.

Whatever the Celestial was hunting for, whatever infected it, is apparently dangerous enough to send Starbrand into a protective frenzy. Not only does attempt to prevent Ghost Rider from discovering its existence, he's willing to murder people without any remorse in order to achieve his goal. Unluckily for him, Ghost Rider's Penance Gaze ends up having deadly results when used on Starbrand (R.I.P. Kevin Conner), leaving the iconic symbol burned into the ground, presumably waiting for its next bearer to discover it.

What’s Loki Playing At?

It’s usually never a good idea to try and guess at the motivations behind any of Loki’s schemes, but this might be an exception to the rule. We find him organizing a troupe of frost giants to steal what ends we eventually learn is an Infinity Stone (the blue mind gem, to be specific) from a S.H.I.E.L.D warehouse.

legacy-loki

According to Loki, he’s actually, genuinely trying to “save the world” this time -- but given his history and the potential of something like the mind gem in his possession, can that actually be true? Add in what we know about his eventual ascent to the role of Sorcerer Supreme of Earth -- slated to happen in November -- and we have to wonder, what does his hunt for an infinity stone actually mean?

Later, we see Loki all but shrug off his lost stone in favor of visiting the site of the crashed Celestial, where he admits to not necessarily needing the stone for its mind-based abilities, but as a power source. What, exactly, is he trying to power?

What Brought Logan Back?

Loki’s hunt for the infinity stone is thwarted by a surprising return -- Logan -- that is to say, regular Logan, the one who died back in 2014, back and right as rain. Apparently working as...a long haul trucker?

Stranger things have happened.

legacy-logan-gem

Logan interrupts the frost giants’ heist by being in the exact right place at the exact right time and lands himself a very easy mind gem and a whole laundry list of unanswered questions. Namely: what brought him back in the first place? And now that he’s so casually got his hands on such a powerful cosmic artifact, what does he plan on doing with it?

”Where the Hell is Tony Stark?”

Tony Stark hasn’t really been himself lately -- and we mean that in the most literal way possible. After Civil War II left him in a coma, the role of the original Iron Man has been filled by a holographic Tony Stark A.I. that occupies one of the original, classic armors. A.I. Tony played a featured part all through Secret Empire and has been an on-again-off-again mentor for Riri Williams as she gets her feet under her as Ironheart, all while the real flesh-and-blood Tony lies dormant in a lab.

However, as we see now, something has gone… wrong. Tony Stark’s unconscious, comatose body has apparently just vanished from the Stark facility he’s been being housed in with absolutely no sign or fluctuations from the monitors keeping track of his biosigns. He was, apparently, there one hour, and then just suddenly gone. But how does an unconscious man just get up and leave?

What is Norman Osborn Looking For?

It would seem Loki isn’t the only person looking for “a power source.” Norman Osborn is apparently willing to go up against Doctor Strange (and his boobytrapped shrubbery) go get at something the Sorcerer Supreme is housing.

legacy-norman-osborn

Of course, seeing that it’s Norman Osborn looking for some sort of occult object of power, there are some pretty pressing questions that should probably be addressed, despite the fact that his efforts were unsuccessful. Questions like why, for instance. If the likes of both Loki and Osborn are both suddenly finding themselves in dire need of power, the odds are that the reason is nothing good. And considering Osborn's recent encounter with magic showed his potential for greatness with the medium, it's a safe bet he's looking to add himself to the growing ranks of Marvel's scientists who double as top-level magicians.

Why Has the Avengers' Founding Members Statue Changed?

This next question is a big strange. Back at the Avengers mansion, Jarvis points out to Nadia that something feels wrong, he just can’t quite put his finger on what or why. He does this while he looks out the window toward the statue of the founding Avengers.

Nadia is quick to say that she doesn’t notice or feel anything strange but...there definitely is something off. The statue, which by rights should only include Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, and Wasp, suddenly has a new addition. Standing by Thor and Iron Man, is Voyager -- the mysterious character teased earlier this month with the ominous tagline, “Who Is Voyager?”

legacy-avengers-statue

Whoever she is, whatever she wants, it seems like time travel and altering the past is definitely involved. The only question is: to what end?

Answers to this particular question will likely be found in the just-announced weekly “No Surrender” story event in Avengers in the coming months.

Who's Calling the Hulk Back to Sakaar?

This might have been inevitable, considering the looming release of Thor: Ragnarok and the easy grab at some brand-wide synergy, but whatever the reasoning, the Hulk is heading back to Sakaar on both page and screen.

Of course, it’s pretty unlikely for Bruce Banner to just up and decide to leave Earth -- which begs the question: who in the cosmos is calling for him? And why?

legacy-hulk-sakaar

Since his recent resurrection(?) in Secret Empire, Bruce’s status has been pretty ambiguous. Namely, no one is really sure how or why he even came back to life at all, much less why his word balloons have suddenly taken on a decidedly Ultimate-flavored style. But it would seem that the outer reaches of space are also very much aware of his return (or, perhaps, news of his death just didn’t travel that far) and are ready for him to come home. Of course, we all know that Amadeus Cho will be the one to answer the call, but will the Totally Awesome Hulk find himself somehow dealing with an Incredible travel mate when he goes intergalactic?

And then there's the Intergalactic Empire of... Wakanda?

What’s really going on out there in space?

Who's the “Final Host?”

After his unsuccessful attempt at netting the blue mind gem, Loki finds himself undeterred on his quest for a power source and immediately travels back to the archeological dig site that housed the million year old “infected” Celestial.

It’s mostly woken up, thanks to the knock-down-drag-out fight between Starbrand and Ghost Rider, and has begun feebly chanting that it needs to summon the “final host.” Now, it’s not too hard to put two-and-two together on just what a “host” is in this context. Each of the Avengers of 1,000,000 B.C. are heroes that ended up passing their power down from person to person: the mantle of Black Panther, the chi of Iron Fist, the Sorcerer Supreme, Mjolnir and the Power of Thor, the Phoenix force, and the Star Brand. However, only one of those particular powers is not currently being utilized by an active hero. (OK, two, since we saw Starbrand's most recent bearer incinerated earlier in the issue.)

legacy-loki-celestial

Theories revolving around the of the return of the Phoenix have been on everyone’s mind since Legacy teasers started to roll in, and we’re about to see the return of the adult Jean Grey in the Marvel Universe… or is that all a feint? Does this have something to do with the mysterious past-altering Voyager? And what does this mean for the young Jean currently operating as an X-Man?

What’s Going On With the Fantastic Four

We knew it had to be coming soon. After the announcement of the new Marvel Two-in-One featuring Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm, it seemed like the clock was all but ticking down on a return for one of the most obviously M.I.A. super teams in Marvel’s roster.

Why We Think Marvel Two-In-One is a Stealth Fantastic Four Relaunch

The Fantastic Four have been shelved from ongoing stories for a few years now, following the completion of the Secret Wars event, making the reveal of Franklin and Varleria Richards out somewhere in the vaguely defined reaches of space a pretty welcome surprise. Where they actually are and how far they have yet to travel in order to get home, however, is anyone’s guess.

legacy-valeria-franklin

Meanwhile, back on Earth, Johnny and Ben are similarly pondering their own legacies before sending the blazing “4” symbol up into the sky, just as a reminder to everyone that they’re still very much around, such as they are.

Now, so far, there hasn’t been any announcement of a new Fantastic Four ongoing from the “Marvel Legacy” slate of titles, so despite the obvious end goal for these teases, we’re still going to be left waiting for an actual payoff, maybe for quite some time (or perhaps not so long). The team is coming back, that much we can be sure of, it’s just the “hows” and the “whys” and the “whens” that are leaving us scratching our heads.
