With the events of Secret Empire in the rear-view mirror, if just barely, Marvel Comics can now shift its focus to its next publishing initiative, Marvel Legacy. This morning the company debuted a new trailer for the venture, promoting Marvel Legacy #1 and the 1,000,000 BC Avengers, original renumbering of issues, and the promise of the return of an iconic character.

Viewers are greeted by Tom Brevoort, Marvel's senior vice president of publishing, who teases what's inside Marvel Legacy #1, a one-shot meant to set off a chain of events that will have far-reaching ramifications across the Marvel Universe for years to come.

Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso also reaffirms the Marvel Legacy era will see the return of fan-favorite characters, but not at the expense of newer heroes like the Miles Morales Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel.

However, the part of the trailer that will undoubtedly garner the most attention comes near the end, when Brevoort reiterates that "Marvel Legacy also features the surprising, unexpected return of a big Marvel icon." Since the initial Marvel Legacy announcement, fans have been pondering which long-forgotten hero or group of heroes could make a triumphant return. Also, Alonso has been quoted as saying its final page of the one-shot is “probably gonna break the internet.”

Marvel Comics’ Legacy initiative kicks off Sept. 27 with Marvel Legacy #1, a 50-page one-shot from writer Jason Aaron and artist Esad Ribic that promises to tell the “startling origin of the Marvel Universe” and underscore how “it’s all connected.”
