Beginning in February, Marvel Comics will publish a line of variant covers specifically designed to get new readers on board and caught up with several ongoing series as they enter their second story arcs. The variant initiative, titled "Story Thus Far," will first appear on covers for issues of "Invincible Iron Man," "Uncanny Inhumans" and "All-New X-Men" before moving on to other titles in March and later.
"The Story Thus Far Variants are something new we've never attempted before," said Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing David Gabriel in the announcement. "Using one piece of artwork to give new fans a quick snapshot of what's going on and get them ready for the second arc. In an effort to continue promotion of these exciting new titles, we'll also be using this artwork for online advertising and in comic shops across the country. "
Marvel has given fans a taste of what the "Story Thus Far" variants will look like by releasing the alternate cover for "Invincible Iron Man" #6, which is the first chapter in writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mike Deodato's "The War Machines" story. The image itself comes from artist Julian Totino Tedesco and features a collage of characters and plot points from the first arc of the series.
