Marvel Considering Monster’s Patty Jenkins To Helm Thor 2

Word surfaced just last month that Game of Thrones director Brian Kirk was in early talks for the sequel to Thor. Now, however, it appears as if Marvel is looking in another, somewhat surprising, direction.

Deadline contends the studio is close to making its selection, and it just may be Patty Jenkins, best known as the writer and director of Monster, the 2003 drama that earned Charlize Theron as Academy Award. Jenkins was also nominated for an Emmy Award for directing the pilot episode of AMC’s The Killing. She would be Marvel Studios’ first female director.

According to Variety, Kirk had been the frontrunner to succeed Kenneth Branagh, but withdrew after creative and financial issues arose during negotiations. Other contenders have reportedly included Breck Eisner (The Crazies), Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods), James McTeigue (Ninja Assassin) and Noam Murro (300: Battle of Artemesia).

Thor, which opened in May, has grossed $447 million worldwide. Don Payne, who co-wrote the first film as well as Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, is tackling the screenplay for the sequel, set to open on July 26, 2013. Chris Hemsworth, who reprises his role as the god of thunder next year in The Avengers, will of course return for Thor 2.
