Speaking with IGN, head of Marvel‘s game division TQ Jefferson stated that there’s not an Avengers video game in the pipeline at the moment — and that the studio is waiting “for the right partner” to uphold Marvel’s high standards.
“The Avengers game will come when we have the right partner, that has the right vision, that has the time to develop a strong, competitive triple-A title and wants to do it right,” Jefferson told IGN. “It has to hit our three pillars: Fun and engaging gameplay, true to the characters, compelling story. Without hitting those notes, we shouldn’t do it. Gamers, they know better. They’re not going to flock to something that’s sub-par.”
Indeed, Marvel’s Cinematic Universe-based console games were badly received by critics and fans alike. “Iron Man 2” received a 41/100 on Metacritic, “Thor: God of Thunder” has a 38/100 and “Captain America: Super Soldier” sits at 60/100. “Captain America” was the last major console game based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe — although the “Avengers: Battle for Earth” motion-control game for Xbox 360/Wii U hit in 2012 — and judging from the reaction, it’s easy to see why the games division has taken a much more cautious approach to the Avengers franchise. (Jefferson even admits in the interview that Marvel “got a bloody nose” on both “Thor: God of Thunder” and “Captain America: Super Soldier.”)
“I think the fact that there wasn’t an Avengers game turned out in time for the film is indicative of Marvel’s new attitude and the approach to how we find partners and build games,” Jefferson said. “I think in the heyday of the movie licensed game, these games were popping out all the time and most of them sucked.”
That said, Marvel’s most recent game, “LEGO Marvel Super Heroes” was well-received by critics and fans and has an aggregate score of 80/100 on Metacritic — and, although Gazillion Entertainment’s “Marvel Heroes” MMORPG launched to lackluster reviews from critics in 2014, the game continues to add content and has garnered praise from its players.
The next big Marvel game is “Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes,” which was revealed on Wednesday at a special press event.
