Legendary director Martin Scorsese has once again taken a jab at the Marvel Cinematic Universe."They turn cinemas into theme parks," he said, elaborating on his previous comments. "Theyâre not cinema, theyâre something else. And we shouldnât be invaded by them."
Scorsese's remarks follow a comment the director made earlier this month in which he compared Marvel movies to "theme parks," adding that they aren't "the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being."
Due to the immense popularity of Marvel movies, Scorsese's critical opinion sparked immediate reactions from those directly involved in the MCU, such as Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Karen Gillan and fellow director James Gunn. Even other pop culture icons, such as Kevin Smith, have also felt the need to voice their opinions on the subject.
Both of Scorsese's statements on the work of Marvel Studios have been made while the director has been promoting his latest film, The Irishmen. The film, directed by Scorsese himself, stars Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino and is set to hit theaters on Nov. 1 before heading to Netflix on Nov. 27.
