With the release of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” the Star Wars franchise will take a step out of the shadow of the Skywalker family. The anthology film will be the first “Star Wars” film to not follow the story of Luke, Leia or Anakin — and Luke Skywalker has something to say about that.
Mark Hamill, who has played Luke Skywalker since 1977’s “Star Wars,” told “Entertainment Tonight” that he has only seen the trailers for “Rogue One” and that “it looks fantastic.”
“They have a real advantage, being able to go in and do a one-off story, because you don’t have to follow the trilogy model of the three-act play,” said Hamill of “Rogue One,” which takes place in the lead-up to the first 1977 “Star Wars” film. “So they can really get it done, get off and leave the audience wanting more. And they have a chance to make their own identity. This one looks like a really gritty World War II film.”
Hamill also had thoughts to share about the 2018 Han Solo prequel film, which will star Alden Ehrenreich in the titular role. “The young [Han Solo] film could be more comedic, you know? Tom Jones-ish about a rogue… They have a chance to branch out and stake out the territory for themselves, so I’m looking forward to it.”
It turns out Hamill met the new Han briefly, but he also has a personal connection to the actor. “I met [Alden Ehrenreich] briefly, but I’m sure they picked the right person. It’s difficult. Good luck to him, I’m sure he’ll be fine but it’s like young Butch and Sundance — following Robert Redford and Paul Newman. I have great confidence in him. He’s a classmate of my daughter’s from Crossroads and she thinks the world of him. He’s very talented.”

Set outside of the main sequel trilogy that began with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Rogue One” is set just before 1977’s “Star Wars” and details the Rebel plot to steal the Death Star plans from the Empire. Directed by Gareth Edwards (“Godzilla,” “Monsters”) from a script by Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz, “Rogue One” stars Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna and Riz Ahmed.
“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” opens on December 16.
Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (“The LEGO Movie”), and written by Lawrence (“The Empire Strikes Back”) and Jon Kasdan, the “Han Solo” anthology film will be released May 25, 2018.
