It must be strange for Marion Cotillard to not be the center of attention. The beautiful French star of Inception and Contagion also appears in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, where she has taken a back seat to Tom Hardy’s Bane voice, Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman suit and speculation about Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s police officer John Blake. Of course, this being a Nolan film, Cotillard’s role also comes shrouded in mystery.
The Hollywood Reporter spoke to the actress about her character, whom Cotillard confirmed is Miranda Tate and not Talia al Ghul, daughter of the antagonist played in Batman Begins by Liam Neeson (who shot a sequence for this latest installment). As a businesswoman focused on green alternatives, Tate “is fascinated by Wayne Enterprises,” Cotillard said. “They go through difficulties, and she wants to help provide the world clean energies. She’s a good guy.” She also insisted that her character stays on the side of the angels throughout the film.
So, do we trust her? It’s hard to say. Like J.J. Abrams, Nolan does a bang-up job of keeping a lid on his stories. If memory serves, Neeson’s identity as Ra’s al Ghul was a surprise for most when the first film opened. We also know that 12-year-old actress Joey King admitted to playing young Talia. Or was that Nolan throwing us off the scent? Maybe the director’s greatest trick is turning reporters and fans into Dark Knight Detectives as they try to figure out what’s happening with the movie.
The Dark Knight Rises also stars Christian Bale as Batman, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Tom Hardy as Bane, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake, Michael Caine as Alfred, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox. It opens July 20.
