Superman landed in Japan over the weekend, ready to take the box office by storm, but wasn't able to defeat one of the country's biggest heroes: anime legend Hayao Miyazaki.

Man of Steel, directed by Zack Snyder, grossed $2.7 million in its opening weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter, but that wasn't enough to topple the reigning champion, Miyazaki's The Wind Rises, which has made $88 million since its debut on July 20. And so, Henry Cavill & Co. had to settle for the No. 2 spot.

With reports of Miyazaki's looming retirement recently hitting, all eyes will be on The Wind Rises to see if it can beat out his most successful feature Spirited Away, which is also Japan's highest-grossing film.

The Wind Rises opens in the United States on Sept. 28.
