After fighting the likes of Lex Luthor, Zod and Brainiac over the years, you wouldn't expect Superman to have much trouble with monsters or zombies - but both bested "Man of Steel" at the box office this weekend.

It was another great weekend at the box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter, as the domestic box office was the second best of the year after Memorial Day. The estimated $236 million take is among the top 10 best weekend of all time.

"Monsters University," the sequel to Disney and Pixar's "Monsters Inc.," took the top spot at the domestic box office this weekend with $82 million, the second-highest opening for a Pixar film after "Toy Story 3"'s $110 million. Worldwide, "Monsters University" brought in a total of $136.5 million

"World War Z," the zombie movie starring Brad Pitt based on the book by Max Brooks, came in second with $66 million, much higher than analysts expected. The film is the biggest debut Pitt has had, besting 2005's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," and brought in $111.8 million worldwide.

"Man of Steel" came in third this week, crossing $200 million mark in its second week of release. The film brought in $41.2 million, down 65 percent since its opening weekend, with a North American total of $210 million.

The top five was rounded out by "This Is The End" and "Now You See Me."
