J.J. Abrams and Angela Robinson are bringing the DC and Justice League Dark sorceress Madame Xanadu to HBO Max in a new series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will be titled Madame X and is in the early stages of development. Robinson  (Professor Marston & the Wonder Women, The L Word) will write the script and executive produce the project. THR also reports Robinson was recruited by Abrams and his wife Katie McGrath with an eight-figure overall deal. Robinson is part of the Time's Up global leadership board, with McGrath serving as co-secretary on the board of directors.

Part of Abrams and his Bad Robot's overall deal with WarnerMedia includes multiple DC projects in various stages of development. It was reported in September 2020 that multiple HBO Max series featuring characters from the Justice League Dark Universe were in the works, most notably John Constantine and Zatanna. It was later confirmed in February that J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot were developing a Constantine series with a young, diverse take on the character. Zatanna has since been confirmed to be receiving a feature film with a script from Oscar-nominated director Emerald Fennell.

The Walking Dead alum Jeryl Prescott previously portrayed Madame Xanadu in the DC Universe series Swamp Thing.

Created by David Michelinie, Val Mayerik and Michael William Kaluta, Madame Xanadu debuted in 1978's Doorway to Nightmare #1. She has often been associated with Nimue, a sorceress from Arthurian legend. Her mystical abilities include clairvoyance, immortality and a sixth sense for magic.
