We’ve known for more than a year now that Sam Raimi has acquired the rights to make a new adaptation of The Day of the Triffids, the plant-themed alien-invasion novel by John Wyndham. While it’s still unclear whether the Evil Dead and Drag Me To Hell director will helm the film, Variety now reports the project now has a screenwriter: Neil Cross.
Best known for creating the super-smart BBC detective series Luther, Cross also has a number of projects in the works with Guillermo del Toro.
The Day of the Triffids, originally published in 1951, depicts an extraterrestrial invasion that starts with blinding meteorites that spawn man-eating plants. The book has been adapted several times including into a number of radio plays as well as a film in 1962 and a pair of BBC TV movies in 1981 and 2009.
