Fox is developing a U.S. remake of the acclaimed BBC crime drama Luther, with creator Neil Cross on board to write and executive produce. Original series star Idris Elba will also executive produce, but he isn't expected to reprise his role.

According to Deadline, the network has given a put pilot commitment to the project, with "a seven-figure penalty," which means odds are pretty good it will make it to television.

Airing for three seasons, from 2010 to 2013, the psychological drama starred Elba as Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, whose obsessive dedication to his work leads him to be consumed by the darkness of the crimes he investigates.

Cross revealed in August 2013 that he'd completed a script for a movie prequel, and hoped to begin shooting sometime this year. However, it appears those plans never materialized.
