It's been more than a decade since Luc Besson's The Fifth Element, but in some ways, cinema still hasn't recovered from the blend of action, colorful camp and a distinctly (and wonderfully) European take on science fiction movies. Maybe that's why I'm so excited by the news that Besson's about to do it all again.

Besson is, according to a French website discovered by CHUD, preparing a new sci-fi movie that he's already calling "Fifth Element to the 10th power," inspired by James Cameron's Avatar and the potential for visual spectacle shown therein. No plot details are available, because Besson doesn't even start official pre-production until next year, but still: This has the potential to be one of the best looking - if potentially nonsensical - movies we'll see in years. That 2012 shoot date is far too far away.
