Former “Lost” showrunner Carlton Cuse is developing Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt’s supernatural Western comic “The Sixth Gun” for NBC, The Live Feed reports. The network’s corporate sibling Syfy originally had plans for the adaptation, which was announced at Comic-Con International 2011 as a potential six-episode miniseries.
Debuting in 2010 from Oni Press, “The Sixth Gun” centers on six fabled pistols of otherworldly power. When the most dangerous of the weapons, the long-missing Sixth Gun, resurfaces in the hands of an innocent girl named Becky Montcrief, dark forces reawaken and villains thought long dead set their sights on retrieving the pistol at any cost. Only Drake Sinclair, a gunslinger with a shadowy past, stands in their way.
The project is being produced by Universal Television and Oni’s production arm Closed on Mondays Entertainment. Screenwriter Ryan Condal will pen the script and executive produce alongside Cuse and Closed on Mondays’ Eric Gitter and Andy Bourne.
This represents the first network sale by Oni and Closed on Monday under their new deal with Universal Television. “The Sixth Gun” also marks the second comic by Bunn and Hurtt being developed for television. Their supernatural gangster series “The Damned” is in the works at Showtime, with “X-Men” screenwriter David Hayter tackling the script.
