Disney's blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise is built on a blend of high-seas adventure and dark fantasy elements that often result in such magical monstrosities as zombie pirates, the ship-destroying kraken, the fish-faced minions of Davy Jones and even terrifying mermaids.  And with the fifth film, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales," that series introduces ghost sharks into the mix. Ghost sharks!

Depicted in the film's new full-length trailer, these phantom predators are also showcased in concept art unveiled by AMC Theatres, alongside the haunting words, "The dead have taken command of the sea ..." We knew Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow was going up against his old rival Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) and his crew of ghost pirates, but ghost sharks? Yikes.

Supernatural sharks have already proved a popular menace of late, with Syfy has managed to make not just one or two, but four (and counting!) "Sharknado" films. Audiences can't seem to get enough of these aquatic predators. Looking back at the whole franchise, the real surprise is that it's taken the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies so long to give us ghost sharks.

In the fifth installment of Disney's blockbuster fantasy-adventure franchise, Jack Sparrow is pursued by old rival Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem), who has escaped from the Devil’s Triangle with his ghost crew, and is now determined to kill every pirate at sea. To defeat him, Jack must seek the Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that grants whoever possesses it total control of the sea.

Directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg from a script by Jeff Nathanson, the film also stars Geoffrey Rush as Hector Barbossa, Brenton Thwaites Henry, Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth, Kevin R. McNally as Joshamee Gibbs, Golshifteh Farahani as the sea-witch Shansa, David Wenham as Scarfield, Stephen Graham as Scrum and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner.

“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” arrives May 26.
