Warning: Potential spoilers!
Filming of The Avengers moved last night from Cleveland’s East Ninth Street, which doubled for New York City’s 42nd Street, to Public Square, which will stand in for a beer garden in Stuttgart, Germany. There onlookers were treated to Tom Hiddleston, fresh from Disney’s D23 fan expo, clad in his green-and-gold Loki armor and wielding a golden staff.
Comics blogger Sean Kleefeld, who’s an extra on the set, says the scene involves Loki showing up on Earth and being confronted by Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). “I’m on the sidelines looking surprised,” he writes.
The Plain Dealer reports that the former Higbee’s Department Store near the square has been turned into a German opera house, while the 52-story Terminal Tower may fall victim to a CGI plane. There was also talk at the set of the Hulk making an appearance, which would jibe with Mark Ruffalo’s absence from D23.

Directed by Joss Whedon, The Avengers also stars Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders and Stellan Skarsgård. It opens opens May 4, 2012.
