Lois Lane Has A Cross To Bear In Smallville’s Season Premiere

Poor, poor Lois Lane. As if it weren’t enough for the street-smart reporter to be possessed by an Egyptian goddess in the upcoming 10th season of Smallville, she’ll also be lashed to a cross in a cornfield in a virtual recreation of the memorable scene from the show’s very first episode in 2001.

The above image of actress Erica Durance from the Sept. 24 season premiere, which comes courtesy of Entertainment Weekly‘s Michael Ausiello, isn’t accompanied by any explanation, beyond that it’s one of many “nods” to the previous nine years we’ll see in the series’ final episodes.

Out of context it seems awfully heavy-handed — a smack to the head, accompanied by, “Hey, remember that? Yeah?” The original scene packed an emotional punch by evoking, intentionally or not, the murder of Matthew Shepard three years earlier. This time around … well, we’ll see.

You can check out a second, happier, image from the season premiere at EW.com.
