Logan May Not Be The End Of The Road For Patrick Stewart's Xavier

Stewart says that while the film will be Hugh Jackman's final appearance as Wolverine, he may not be done as Professor X.

After almost seventeen years and nine films, Hugh Jackman will permanently sheathe his claws once the credits role on "Logan" this March. The actor has made it known that the third solo Wolverine movie will be his final appearance as the clawed X-Man, ending an era of superhero films. But just because Hugh Jackman's done doesn't mean everyone in the film is also done.

In a recent chat with ET Online, Patrick Stewart -- who has played Professor X in seven films including "Logan" -- revealed that he may be up for future films as Charles Xavier.

“Hugh has raised the flag that says goodbye. I haven’t done that yet,” said Stewart.

While Stewart hasn't officially raised that flag, he has previously hinted that this might be his last appearance as Xavier. Back in August 2016, Stewart indicated that "Logan" may be the end of the road for him.

“I would imagine this is probably the end of the franchise for me,” said Stewart. His comments at the time left some wiggle room, though, and he added, “But the thing about science fiction and fantasy is that you can never, ever say it’s the end, it’s over.”

Later on in his new ET Online interview, Stewart complimented Hugh Jackman's longevity with the character, which has spanned the entire duration of the modern superhero movie era. "His charm and modesty and likeability has never changed,” Stewart said. “What has changed is the actor. His work throughout the franchise is compelling and powerful and witty and very entertaining, and I believe what he does in 'Logan' is quite extraordinary. The aging, the sadness, the weariness, the borderline despair he exhibits coupled with that edge that has always been there is quite remarkable."

Set beyond the events of “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” 2017’s “Logan” is set in the near future following a cataclysmic event that ravaged the mutant race. As a result, Wolverine's healing factor will be greatly diminished. It will also be Hugh Jackman’s final outing as Wolverine, and will introduce Dafne Keen as the character’s teenage clone X-23.
